Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 are known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) and they are very important for the normal functioning of your body system. Omega 3 and Omega 6 cannot be produced by your body so you have to ingest them from foods. These two are important for brain development, immune system function and blood pressure regulation.

 

What Is Omega-3 Fatty Acid?

Omega-3 fatty acid is an essential fatty acid found primarily in fish oils which plays an important role in brain function and may help you fight cardiovascular disease. Research on the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acid has shown that it may be useful against the following: asthma, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, some cancers, skin disorders, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, attention disorders, depressive disorders, eye problem, & digestive difficulties.

Apart from fish oils, Omega-3 is found naturally in: grains, brazil nuts, hempseed oil, mustard seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seed oil, canola oil (rapeseed), flaxseed oil, spirulina, wheat germ oil, green leafy vegetables & raw walnuts.

What is Omega-6 Fatty Acid?

Omega-6 fatty acid combined with omega-3 fatty acid produces many of the health benefits mentioned above. It’s best to eat them in the right amounts. You should be eating about twice as much omega-6 as omega-3, so that your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 2:1. It’s rather unfortunate that in today’s world of fast food and high calorie snacks, most people are getting 15 times more omega-6 than omega-3!

The best sources of omega-6 are seeds, nuts, grains, green leafy vegetables and in certain raw vegetable oils. Care should be taken in preparing vegetables because cooking destroys the
benefits of the fatty acids in it.
Omega-6 fatty acids are also found naturally in: seeds, pistachios, sesame oil, hempseed oil, pumpkin seeds, chia seed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, wheat germ oil & grape seeds.

What Is Omega-9 Fatty Acid?

Omega-9 is the only non-essential fatty acid, produced naturally in your body whenever there is enough of either Omega 3 or 6. However, if you do not have enough omega 3 and omega 6, then you must get omega 9 from your diet or supplements. This fatty acid plays a vital role in promoting heart health by regulating cholesterol levels and improving immunity.

Omega-9 fatty acids are also found naturally in: avocados, pecans, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts, chia seed oil & olive oil.
