In our looks-obsessed society, a lot of people think that being overweight is an appearance issue only but it goes beyond that! Being fat is more of a medical concern because it can seriously affect a person’s health.

The health problems that stem from being overweight go beyond the common ones such as diabetes and heart disease. It can also affect your joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels to mention a few.

 

What Overweight Really Is.

 

Being fat is not a bad thing! When you eat more calories than you burn off, your body stores the extra as fat which serves as a store of useful energy.

However, when you keep eating more calories than you burn, more fat builds up in your body. Eventually, this build-up affects you negatively in several ways. We’ll look at them soon.

 

Why Do People Become Overweight?

 

Have you observed that obesity seems to run in some families? Obese parents tend to have obese children especially when they live together. This is slightly due to genetics passed down the blood line. Genes which determine how fat is stored & burned.

However, overweight is due more to the habits established by these people. The habits about eating & living are powerful & usually hard to break. Some unhealthy habits such as eating fast, eating while viewing TV, eating when depressed and so on contribute to the issue.

The cycle continues when kids do what they see their parents do & imitate.

Health Problems of Being Overweight..

 

Obesity is bad news for both your body and mind. Not only can it make you feel tired and uncomfortable, carrying extra weight puts added stress on your body, especially your bones and joints.

Some of the physical and emotional problems that can affect overweight people are:

1] Bent legs (overweight kids who lacked calcium while growing up are likely to have this)

2] Asthma (inability to breathe properly due to blockage of the bronchi)

3] High blood cholesterol.

4] High blood pressure (a result of number 3).

5] Diabetes (more insulin is made in the body to absorb excess sugar. This affects its quality over time)

6] Arthritis (excess body fat increases pressure on joints of the legs especially, creating pains)

7] Sleep apnea (inability to breathe properly while sleeping).

8] Gallstones (Bile is vital in breaking down fat. An accumulation of bile that hardens in the gallbladder forms gallstones. These may be painful and require surgery).

9] Fatty liver (When fat accumulates in the liver, it can cause inflammation, scarring and permanent liver damage).

10] Infertility (Women who are overweight may miss periods — or not get their periods at all — and may have elevated testosterone “male hormone” levels in the blood).

11] Fibroids (In most obese women, the chances of fibroids developing are great because of the high insulin levels in their blood. Insulin is required to absorb excess sugar in the body)

12] Depression (People who are obese are more likely to be depressed and have a low self-esteem).
